FAQ

How long is the Silver Pines demo?
Most players report somewhere between 90 minutes and two and a half hours for a full run. Wych Elm has never published an official figure, and media previews were limited to roughly the first hour.
Where do I get the underpass key in Silver Pines?
From Garth's Pharmacy. It is one of the first key items in the demo and it gates the route that leads toward Rodney's General Store and the underpass.
What is the payphone number in the Silver Pines demo?
One recorded playthrough used 77221 to save, but the developer-facing preview says puzzles and codes are randomised between runs, so read the number from the note and phone book in your own save.
Can I get into the lighthouse in the Silver Pines demo?
No. The developer confirmed that the lighthouse needs a later item that does not exist in the demo, and neither the shotgun nor a heavy melee attack opens it.
Does the Silver Pines demo autosave?
Yes, at least twice for free. The game autosaves after the opening phone call from your client and again before the final boss, so you do not pay for those.

How long is the Silver Pines demo, and what does Part 1 cover?

This is Part 1 of a four-part walkthrough of the Silver Pines demo, and it runs from the opening in the diner to the point where you collect the underpass key from Garth’s Pharmacy. Nothing here requires a code you cannot read off the environment.

On length: Wych Elm has never published an official demo duration. Player reports range from about 90 minutes for a focused run to two and a half hours for a thorough one, and an experienced player who already knows the solutions can finish in roughly an hour. Several press previews describe “the hour-long demo”, but those were timed preview sessions rather than the full content, which is why the numbers look inconsistent. Plan for roughly two hours if you search every corner.

Part Coverage
Part 1 (this page) Diner, payphone contract, street, sheriff, Garth’s Pharmacy
Part 2 Rodney’s General Store, calendar puzzle, underpass
Part 3 Crimson Bear Motel, Eddie’s suite, pool and games room
Part 4 Rabbit Hole, ferry key, tunnel boss, demo ending

What should you do first inside the diner?

You start as Red Walker, waking in an empty diner with no memory of how he got there. The public demo may or may not include the narrated dream sequence that press previews described, so if your opening looks different from a video you watched, that is likely why rather than a bug.

Search the diner before you leave. There are four things worth your time, and all of them are in the opening building:

  1. The note. Read it. Silver Pines puts puzzle information in the world rather than in a quest log, and the first note establishes that habit.
  2. The camera. You pick it up here. It is one of the most useful tools in the demo.
  3. The coffee machine. This is a permanent stamina upgrade, and it is easy to walk past.
  4. The radio. It sits in a separate room and triggers a story beat, plus the game’s signature dial puzzle.

[!tip] Check every room before you leave a building The diner is a tutorial space with no enemies in it, and it hides a permanent upgrade inside. Silver Pines rewards the same behaviour everywhere else.

Where is the coffee machine, and what does it upgrade?

The coffee machine is in the diner at the very start of the game, and interacting with it upgrades your stamina. That matters more than it sounds. Stamina in Silver Pines is deliberately short, it powers both sprinting and dodging, and running dry leaves Walker “pretty defenseless” in IGN’s words. A permanent stamina increase at minute ten is the single best early pickup in the demo.

Because the machine is a fixture rather than a glowing item, players regularly miss it on a first pass. If you are following this walkthrough in order, find the coffee machine before you take the client call outside. The beginner guide covers the other early systems, and the inventory guide explains where the slot upgrades fit in.

How do you use the radio in the diner?

The radio uses a point-and-click tuning interface rather than an analogue dial you sweep. You select your way to the correct frequency, and hitting it triggers a story sequence.

[!warning] The frequency is a per-run value In the playthrough we checked, the correct setting was 89.0. A developer-facing preview states that “the puzzles and codes are randomized between every run”, and that claim has a single source, so treat 89.0 as a recorded value rather than a universal answer. If it does not work in your save, the correct number is somewhere in the room’s own materials. The radio frequency puzzle page explains where to look.

The same principle applies to every number in the demo. Read the environment, do not copy a code from a guide, and expect any fixed number you find online to be one player’s roll of the dice. The demo puzzle codes overview collects all of them with credibility notes.

Where do you find the camera, and why does it matter?

The camera is inside the diner, and it is the tool that makes the map usable. Photographs you take are attached to the map as markers, which lets you record a puzzle hint, a locked door, or a key item and come back to it later without holding it in your head.

That matters because Silver Pines rarely pauses. Opening the inventory does not stop the game, and neither does entering a code at a keypad, so anything you can offload onto the map is cognitive space you get back. The developer’s stated reason for the no-pause design is that “pausing really kills tension”. The camera is the game’s answer to the problem it creates. Our map and camera guide covers what the map marks automatically and what it does not.

What happens when the payphone rings outside the diner?

Leave the diner and the payphone outside rings. Answer it. The voice on the other end is your client, and the instruction is the game’s tagline: “Find Eddie Velvet.” Eddie Velvet is a musician who has vanished, and the call is what turns the demo from an empty building into a case.

The call ends with a free autosave. That is the first of at least two in the demo, the second coming before the final boss. Neither costs money, which is worth knowing because Silver Pines charges for saves at payphones.

How does the payphone save system work before you leave the street?

Saving is the mechanic that defines the demo’s economy. You dial a number at a payphone and pay coins for the privilege, and the same coins buy ammunition and healing from vending machines. One player measured the demo cost at roughly 1.25 coins per save, describing 25 dollars as “enough for 20 saves”. That is a player measurement, not an official number, but the shape is right: saves compete with supplies for the same wallet.

Three things make this cheaper than it first appears:

  • Every payphone’s coin return slot holds one free coin, and demo Patch 2 made that coin more visible.
  • The game autosaves for free after the client call and before the boss.
  • The save number is written down for you. Demo Patch 1 increased the phone book font after players lost whole runs to a misread digit.

The number in the playthrough we checked was 77221, and one player misread it as “7722)” and could not save. As with the radio, the developer has said there is more than one number you can dial and that you must work out and dial the correct one yourself, so read your own note. Our payphone save code page and saving guide go deeper on both.

What does the sheriff on the street tell you?

Once you are outside, follow the street. You meet the sheriff, who explains the evacuation order and points you toward the ferry. This is the demo’s main piece of scene-setting: the town is being emptied, and the ferry is the way out.

The sheriff is unnamed in everything we checked, so do not expect a name to appear later. Two practical notes. First, do not skip this dialogue - Steam has a dedicated “Skipped a dialogue, don’t know where to go” thread, and the evacuation conversation is the one that tells you where the plot is heading. Second, the street is where the game stops being a corridor; if you can see a route, you can usually take it.

Beat What to do
Client call Answer the payphone outside the diner, hear “Find Eddie Velvet”
Free autosave Fires automatically when the call ends
Street Walk the town, talk to the sheriff about the evacuation order
Objective Head for Garth’s Pharmacy

Where do you get the underpass key?

Garth’s Pharmacy. It is the next named objective after the street conversation, and the underpass key you pick up there opens the route onward. Make sure you actually take the key rather than just reading the label; key items are the metroidvania currency in Silver Pines, and demo Patch 2 stopped players from discarding some of them by accident.

The pharmacy also gives you your first proper look at how the town is laid out. Its position matters later, because the most common route confusion in the demo happens after the general store rather than here. Our all key items page tracks every key in the demo and where it comes from.

Which things in the demo are deliberately locked or unreachable?

Quite a few, and this is the most common source of wasted hours. Nothing in the list below is a puzzle you have failed to solve. It is content waiting for the full game.

Unreachable in the demo Evidence
Lighthouse interior Developer confirmed it needs a later item
Car trunk in the motel car park Player-confirmed, listed as unusable in the demo
Boarded-up shack near the diner Player report
Underwater area beneath the pier Player report
Locked dressing room at the Rabbit Hole Player report
Room 3 at the Crimson Bear Motel Player report, though there is another route to talk to its occupant
Cracked rock wall (bottom right of the map) Player question, no answer; shotgun does nothing
Furnace Player uncertainty, developer never answered
Boat engine parts and “the fragment” Listed as not fully usable in the demo
The stars box Dedicated thread, no public solution
Cable car Players could not find an entrance in the demo

Official source: developer reply on the lighthouse in the demo

The lighthouse is the clearest case. The developer wrote: “I can verify that you won’t be getting into the light house in the demo, you’ll need a later item for that.” Players had been firing shotguns and heavy melee attacks at the concrete wall for weeks before that reply.

[!note] The general rule If an obstacle in the demo refuses every tool you have, that is usually the design rather than a hidden solution. Silver Pines gates progress behind tools and weapons, and the demo deliberately withholds some of them.

What should you do after Garth’s Pharmacy?

Take the underpass key and head onward. The next stretch is Rodney’s General Store, where a calendar puzzle hands you the meat locker code, and then the underpass itself. That is Part 2 of this walkthrough.

If you get stuck between the store and the delivery point, that specific loop has a developer-written answer: jump the left-hand wall and cut the tarp with the boxcutter. It is covered in Part 2 along with the basement vent that most players miss.
